But in fact, the events that defined the soul and heart of our brand took place much earlier, at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Alejandro Felix Ortega, a street fighter with a natural sense of style in clothing, became an iconic ‘elegant bad boy’ – a compliment his contemporaries grudgingly paid him.
Alejandro was born into an Italian-Spanish family at the turn of two centuries. In 1917, young Ortega was already known as a brawler and a connoisseur of stylish clothing. He had a reckless temperament and courage bordering on foolhardiness: he took part in clashes with both criminals and the law.
In Mexico he settled in Juarez, where he joined the Lucha Libre fighters and became a luchador, a so called ‘rudo’, disregarding the rules and striving to win by any means. Within three years thanks to his unique fighting style he gained popularity. The audience was impressed by Alejandro’s ability to carry himself in the ring and in life with dignity and a certain panache.
The popularity of Alejandro Ortega was growing, mainstream press adored him, his fights were discussed throughout the country. The fame brought him money.
Ortega spent the money he earned on charity and on his exquisite wardrobe. Local tailors made suits for him using the most fashionable European patterns and the best fabrics.
Despite playing the role of “rudo” or “villain” in the ring, Alejandro earned utmost respect from the people of Mexico. If he found himself in a particular bar where a fight broke out, he never stood aside and always protected the weak and the helpless.
It was rumored that it was Alejandro Ortega, a Spanish immigrant, who became the inspiration for El Valiente, the Brave One, one of the cards of the Mexican national lottery.
By the age of 40, Don Alejandro married a silver screen star and left the ring to start his acting career. He and his wife moved to Mexico City, where he consulted stuntmen at a major movie studio.
The firm became a success: many famous metropolitan men, athletes, politicians, and actors sought to dress there. It was said that Don Alejandro's suits brought good luck.
